IIT Kanpur is one of the five First Generation Indian Institutes of Technology. The institute was registered under Registration of Society Act XXI of 1860 on 2nd November, 1959. The Institute began functioning on the borrowed premises of Harcourt Butler Technological Institute in 1959, accommodating a modest faculty and 100 students. Today, it has a sprawling residential campus, catering to more than 10000 students, and a faculty of 555 members, supported by over 1500 staff members.
