Prof. U B Tewari

About

Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur

Professor Uday Bhan Tewari was born on 18th June 1944 in a village Mukeripur, Ambedkar Nagar, Uttar Pradesh. He passed away on 2nd July, 2019 around 4pm due to a massive heart attack at his residence in Azad Nagar, Kanpur. He is survived by his wife daughter, son and grand children.

U.B. Tewari, popularly known as UBT, was a distinguished mathematician and has indeed left a legacy. After his bachelor and master's degree from Lucknow University, he joined IIT Kanpur in 1964, as a Ph.D. student and then later moved to University of California Berkeley for a Ph.D in 1967. At Berkeley he worked with a Professor Henry Helson, a leading figure in Harmonic Analysis, and obtained the degree in the year 1969. After his Ph.D he moved to Institut Mittag-Leffler, Dijursholm, Sweden for a year (1969-1970). He chose to work at IIT Kanpur as a faculty member in the year 1970 and became a full professor at a young age of 37 and remained there till 2009.

UBT was instrumental in making IIT Kanpur Mathematics Department a serious place for mathematics, Analysis in particular. As a consequence, IIT Kanpur has produced many brilliant mathematicians. Through his inspiring and rigorous teaching he made many difficult books and concepts easy to understand for generations of mathematicians trained at IIT Kanpur. Most of his students owe their solid foundation of mathematics to him. They respect him enormously.

Prof. U B Tewari

He started an Harmonic Analysis school at IIT Kanpur and brought colleagues from other reputed Institutes together. This has now become a large family consisting of colleagues, students, grand students and great grand students.

He has been recognised for his work by receiving many accolades such as Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, Meghnad Saha Award for Research in Theoretical Sciences and Fellow, National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad.

UBT shared a beautiful relationship with his colleagues. He was loved and respected for his forthrightness, firm beliefs and sensitivity. Many sought his advice in time of need he never failed them.

There are many stories concerning UBT's witty and humorous remarks, which are remembered fondly whenever his former students and friends meet.

Prof. UB Tewari

Prof. Tewari was my recitation instructor (tutor) for MTH101. I fondly remember him giving very elegant alternate solutions to homework problems in a way that made it seem like mathematics came so naturally to him, like a language. Although my interaction with him was limited to that tutorial, his simplicity, rigor and his sense of humor left a lasting impact on me and it formed a strong impression of the pure mathematics community at IIT Kanpur. He will be missed dearly. May he rest in peace.

The family

Deeply saddened to know that Prof. U. B. Tiwari has passed away. When I joined IIT Kanpur as a faculty member in 2001, UBT was head of the department. My introduction to profession was by UBT. Learnt so many things (of course, including mathematics) from him, heard so many stories and jokes while having 'Brijlal ki chaye' at the 6th floor of faculty building. Suddenly, old memories are rushing back...Rest in peace, Sir.

It is a great loss for many of us who grew up learning the subject under his mentorship. Prof. U B Tewari was a devoted academician. He was a simple and modest, but firm, person who accepted no nonsense in academics. He had the most refined taste for the subject and played a key role in building the department of Mathematics at the IIT Kanpur. The department, especially the Analysis group, flourished under his leadership and earned reputation globally. I pray the almighty to provide strength to his family and friends to bear the loss.

Very sorry and sad to learn about the untimely passing away of Professor U B Tewari, fondly known and called as UBT. Professor Tewari was an acknowledged Mathematician par excellence. He was well known in the academic fraternity for his intellectual pursuits and all over the place. He had developed and nurtured the Harmonic Analysis group in the department which is now visible as a school of many young and active researchers in this area and all over the place.
I had a fond association with UBT for more than three decades at IITK. A very warm and unassuming personality. He had the passion, urge, and appetite for quality research even in the later days. We all would miss him for a long time to come. A true Academician who would value academics in the right spirit, finesse, and all fairness.
My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. May his soul rest in peace!
