Professor Sanjeev Kumar Aggarwal

About

Professor Sanjeev Kumar Aggarwal
(1957-2014)
Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur

Sanjeev Kumar Aggarwal was born on 27th Dec. 1957. He graduated with a BSc (Hons.) in Physics from Hindu College and then continued with an MSc also in Physics from Delhi University. He did an MTech in Nuclear Engineering and Technology from IIT Kanpur, shifted to the then burgeoning area of Computer Science for his PhD, finishing in 1987 and continued in computing.

He joined TRDDC, Pune as a Research Scientist in 1986 and was with them till 1990 when he came back to academics and to IIT Kanpur as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Till July 2013 when he left, on long leave, to become the Director of BITS Pilani, Goa campus he was continuously at IIT Kanpur and played a major role in the growth of the CSE department and the institute. He was successively Head of the Computer Centre, then Head of the CSE department and finally Dean, Resource Planning and Generation. In each of these roles he excelled as an administrator and contributed hugely to their growth.

Professionally, his interests were in compilers, language analysis and compiling for new and novel architectures. He was a leading light of the compiler and programming language analysis community in India. He mentored over 89 MTechs, 2 PhDs and a host of BTech students. He had strong links with industry and had joint projects with Sun Microsystems (now taken over by Oracle), IBM and Intel. He was also a Coordinator of the erstwhile Prabhu Goel Centre on Computer and Network Security and instrumental in organizing the first Security and Privacy Symposium in 2013. The second edition will be held in Feb. 2014 where his presence will be sorely missed.

His compiler course in the department was legendary. The project component of the course taught multiple generations of students actually how to build compilers. He created a web version of the course for NPTEL (National Program on Technology Enhanced Learning) which became very popular and still is.

His calm, organized way of approaching any issue meant that many students, faculty and staff sought his help and advice when confronted with a problem and almost always they came away with a lighter heart and a possible solution.

Given his exceptional administrative abilities he had been made many offers to lead institutions but had steadfastly refused till he was asked to lead BITS Pilani Goa to take it to the 'next level'. The challenge of taking a well known institution and making it better appealed to him and he went as Director to BITS Pilani, Goa campus in July of 2013. He was deeply involved in his work in Goa and was excited by the changes that were beginning to happen.

Few except his close friends and family knew that he was an exceptional cook and was always looking for new recipes to try out. However, unlike most, his came out right the very first time.

He leaves behind his parents, wife Vineeta, daughter Anupama, son Keshav, and all his friends and colleagues at IITK and BITS Goa. We shall always remember him for his warmth, his friendship, and for being a wonderful human being. Wherever he is now we are sure he is trying to make it a better place than before.

I  an deeply shocked by this sad news. As president of IIT Kanpur Alumni Association and CFO of IIT kanpur Foundation, I had the privilege of working closely with Prof. Sanjeev Aggarwal, when he was DRPG, and then on IITK Vision 2020. Sanjeev's affable nature and his quiet efficiency and dedication to IITK impressed me. He was able to get people to work together and bridge differences effectively. His good nature and wonderful sense of humor will always be remembered. He made invaluable contributions to IITK. We will all miss him dearly. The sad news of the demise of Prof Sanjeev Aggarwal was shocking and unbelievable. Though I had very limited set of interactions with him (since I had met him for the first time in 1986 at TRDDC, Pune), these interactions were very pleasant. I am still not able to believe the news. May Almighty give a lot of strength to his family and friends to cope with and move forward in life. I know this is not easy.

I am deeply saddened to know about the sudden demise of Prof. Aggarwal. His compiler design course was the best course I took at IITK, and that was perhaps the only course that made me really think like a Computer "Engineer".

I did the compiler course offered Prof. Agrawal and it was one of the courses that I actually enjoyed. I was strongly influenced by the clarity of thought and speech in his lectures. He was very helpful and considerate in dealing with students, I got reprimanded a few times for not being on time to the lectures and for sloppy project work, but he never turned down any reasonable request that I had to make of him. Professor Agrawal will live on in my memories as an excellent teacher and an admirable and imitable human being.

He was like my father. The stay of 5 years that I had at IIT Kanpur would not have been possible without him and Anuty. He had an outstanding skill of managing the trickiest of the problems with ease without any signs on his face. He was one of the finest person I've ever known. The first day I attended his class(Advanced Compiler Optimization) on July 2010, I was overwhelmed to see the way he presented the concepts in the most lucid manner. I considered him as an idol and got one of the biggest shock on Jan 11 to learn about the mishap; I could hardly get sleep. It's not only difficult but also excruciating to acknowledge the fact that professor is no more.

There is no other person who impressed more than SKA sir. He was best in everything he did. He was most influential teacher I had, Animation of slides which he created with his slide pointer in lectures of legendary course 738 are still printed in mind so clearly. In fact even before entering IITK, when I was preparing for GATE exam, I found a website which hosted great slides about Compiler course and only referred those slides for Compiler course. Later, when in IITK I realized the slides were from SKA sir. What a great administrator he was, I can always hear his strong and clear voice in my head. I never saw anyone so efficient at administrative work in my entire life. He was perfect guide one can wish for. During initial period of my thesis work, I was totally confused about so many articles and papers available for GPUs and graphics and was completely lost. I went to him and he said, forget graphics and everything, just think its a vector machine and what would do about to use it. Everything completely changed immediately. He always guided with such clarity and talking to him was always liberating. Best of all he was a great friend. He always use to call or personally meet whenever he knew some student was not well. All the stories he told about IITK made everyone laugh to the core. There are endless memories. He always be with us, in heart and mind. May his soul rest in peace.

Prof Agarwal was the DRPG when I joined IITK & i had a brief interaction with him then and a heartfelt smiley nod association thereafter. He was such a sharp man that his explanation on mobile phone technology to a non-tech person like me was so clear that it was a quantum leap in my understanding and i have quoted it thereof so many times thereof. But there are a lot of smart people around, the real magic was in his character, his warmth and simplicity - a true intellectual indeed. Farewell, my friend.

Sanjeev was the head of the department when I joined as a faculty member. Without his kind help, it would have been much more difficult for me to get settled in the campus during the first several months. Later I collaborated with Sanjeev in developing a course on program optimization and together we attended several workshops and conferences organized by Intel. Sanjeev played a key role in connecting me with several researchers in Intel, a collaboration that I have immensely benefited from. Three things about Sanjeev prominently stand out in my memory: his eagerness to help, his systematic and organized mind, and his dedication toward whatever he does. In everything that he put his hands on, he would take care of every minute detail meticulously. I still find it hard to believe that I won't be able to talk to him again. May his soul rest in peace.

This is very sad. He was one of the best teachers at IITK. I remember his compilers class. This was our 2nd or 3rd year, and I was struck by something that he used to do routinely in his class, but I hadn't seen anyone else do in their classes until then. It was an act as simple as this: he would try to sense if his audience was confused during a lecture, and if so, he would just stop. He'd stop and not move on until he had attempted his best to clarify. A lesser teacher would have easily moved on, but he didn't. He deeply cared about his teaching and our learning. His class project was one of the most "real" coding projects we did in our 4 years. I thank him for the difference he made for us.

It was shocking to hear that. I first met him, when he was doing is PhD at IIT/K and was working with a girl of our batch who had opted to work in computer center for short time(He used to work with VM Mehrotra, who was also a TA or had just become a prof at that time). Then I heard of him in TRDDC, where he was working on CHILL compiler and was one of the key guys for Keshav Nori. Met him in 2010, he was lively at that time too. Learnt later that he was working with Vivek Sarkar at Rice Univ for the next generation of parallel compilers for future multi core CPU's(1000 plus cores). May God give strength to his family for this untimely loss.

I am extremely shocked to hear about this sad news. Prof. Aggarwal's legendary compilers course helped built up character and provided me skills that I continue to use extensively to date and pass on to other students. His affable personality was always something to depend on and remained as one of my defining impressions of IITK. We had met several times and kept in close touch through email since I graduated from IITK in 2000. I still very vividly remember my interactions with him when I last met him in 2012 at IITK where ISEC was being held and Prof. Aggarwal was its general chair. There are very few people like him with such a balance of academic and administrative interests and accomplishments. It is a terrible loss for the burgeoning Indian academic environment that had so much to benefit from Prof. Aggarwal's efforts. Where ever he is, he will continue to be a source of great inspiration for the lives he touched. My heart goes out to his family - May God give them the strength to navigate through this untimely loss and move forward in life with his inspiring memories that will never fade away.

For last 3.5 years, he had been been constantly helping me in my professional activities - courses, projects. I could just walk into his office any time for guidance on any matter. I worked with him for organizing few conferences, and was amazed by his organizational skills and management. He himself used to ask us for sending any thing for Harshit whenever he had his visit to NITK. We shall miss Prof. Sanjeev forever. May God rest his soul in Peace & give enough Strength to his old parents, Vineeta Ji & Anupama to bear this shock of the lifetime. OPM

I am deeply saddened to hear of Prof. Aggarwal's untimely demise. I still remember the advanced compilers class he taught in Fall 1990. That class inspired me to take up compilers and static analysis as my research area, and 23 years later, I still consider myself very fortunate to have taken that class from Prof. Aggarwal. Rest in peace, Sir.

I am very saddened to hear of Prof. Aggarwal's demise. I had the privilege to meet him regulary when I was visiting Faculty at the CSE dept of IIT Kanpur in the winter 2011-2012. I do remember his warm welcome when arriving at IITK and his kindness. I will keep the memory of a very warm person. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. I am shocked and deeply mourned. He was my guide. He was the one who taught me how to do research. His affable nature has helped me interacting at ease. He will always be my mentor, his words will always be remembered and will guide me in future. We had exchanged mails only a week ago for submitting a paper in a conference. I could not believe he is no more. May his soul rest in peace. May god give strength to his family.

SKA sir was an exceptional teacher and a very warm human being. Since, it has been quite a few years, I have forgotten most of what I learnt in the course on Compilers. However, what I have not forgotten is the enormous warmth he exuded and of course, the ever-present smile on his face. May he rest in peace.

The news came as complete shock and hard to believe. I was looking forward to meeting ska sir during the Security & Privacy Symposium at IITK. The loss is unbearable. He was my M.Tech thesis supervisor and I'd taken his Advanced Compiler Optimizations which was simply the best course. He used to explain any topic in such simple manner using illustrations that even complex concepts will become clear to students. I have learnt so many things from him - right from how to read papers critically to how to deal with problem in systematic way. His inspiring, always calm and patient personality, his words of encouragement will always be remembered and he will always remain in our hearts. May God give strength to his family to bear the loss.

His contribution to the field of computer science research and the department is very extreme and especially in the area of software engineering. I had done courses under him and he is my thesis examiner. I learnt many things from him, he gave me a lot of feedback and suggestions for improving my technical background. Hope i will use it in my future and bring a good name to him.

Professor Aggarwal was the instructor in the very first lecture I attended at IIT Kanpur, almost a decade ago. Yet, his charismatic teaching was such that his impromptu demonstration of how pervasive computers have become still remains fresh in the mind. He was the first mentor I had at IIT Kanpur, and I will always remain grateful to him for all the advice, encouragement and last but not least, his extremely enjoyable and highly instructive classes.

I remember Sanjeev as extremely warm hearted and generous to a fault. His vibrant and endearing persona will be sorely missed. At meetings when the going would become slightly dreary he often brought smiles on the faces of people with his sense of wit. His technical expertise on Compilers and Language Processing was unmatched in more ways than one. I attended some of his lectures way back in 1998. He taught and communicated with aplomb and authority. Whether they be students in his class lectures or audience in a seminar/ workshop, they always came away impressed and satisfied. His untimely departure, while in the prime of his professional career and the suddenness of it all bleeds my heart.

Indeed, no visit to IIT/K was complete without dropping into his office or home for a quick cup of tea. For last two decades, I had developed a strong bond of relationship with Sanjeev and his family (beause both his daughter and son were not only the students of my wife in the Kislay Nursery School, but they were learning vocal music from her too). Even I had the opportunity to work with him in different capacities at the Institute, to start with as a Warden of Hall V in early 1990s and subsequently in SPGC and lastly Sanjeev as DRPG. Through all these professional associations I have found in him a good human being with a charming personality, who was always in smiles. He was always committed for the cause of the student and staff. Both myself and my wife deeply mourn the untimely death of Sanjeev. We pray Lord Almight to give courage and strength to Vineeta,Anupama & Keshav to bear this great loss.

Then I heard of him in TRDDC, where he was working on CHILL compiler and was one of the key guys for Keshav Nori. Met him in 2010, he was lively at that time too. It is indeed very shocking to realize that Prof. Sanjeev Kumar Aggarwal is no more with us. It is difficult to overcome this shock even after a week. He was a person full of ONLY positive energy. I have the memories of countless occasions when I saw his noble qualities. On professional front, he was an excellent researcher and an outstanding teacher. His organizational skills were so good that everyone in the department got benefited and inspired by this quality. He used to feel happy on every occasion of success of any faculty member or student in the department. He used to help every one who approached him. I wish I could have such a sensitive and large heart for others. As a person, I found him extremely balanced person having peace all the times. As a colleague, he was like an elder brother to me. He truly practiced the philosophy that one should see only positive qualities in others instead of wasting time and peace in criticizing others for their mistakes or bad qualities. I got benefited by his wise advices on many occasions. It is indeed hard to believe that he is no more with us. I sometimes doubt even the Nature/God for taking away a person who could give some much to the society. I am sure he will be remembered by me, students and colleagues for his great qualities. May God grant eternal peace to him.

I had gone to visit the Physics Dept. of BITS Pilani, Goa Campus for 5 days on Nov. 20, 2013. When I reached around 3 Pm their Guest House, I was told that their Director did not want them to take me to his office. Instead at around 7 Pm, I got a call that he is already in the lounge of the GH. As I was going out, the bell rang & Sanjeev came in. I was elated to see him after nearly 8 years since I left IITK. We talked for nearly an hour. He seemed to be enjoying his work. I found later that faculty members there were extremely happy since he was bringing IITK culture, namely openness & no hierarchy. It's now more than a month since that terrible afternoon, and yet, the grief and the sense of loss is no less. It's difficult to describe what Sanjeev was to our Department-- collectively we had the confidence that whatever be the demand or need, we could depend on Sanjeev. Sanjeev's commitment to the Department was absolute-- he left for Goa only after ensuring that the area of compilers and language processing would be well looked after in his absence. He was a natural leader-- in all kinds of situations, especially the ones which were difficult ones, one would discover after a while that Sanjeev was in the lead. Everything that he did, he did with great grace. And he was a great friend. We'll always miss you, Sanjeev.
